Setup
Set up Vory
Vory is an app for your own AI agents. It doesn’t run them itself. It connects to a Hermes gateway that you run, and every agent on it shows up as a bot you can chat with.
If you’ve never set up Hermes, this page gets you from nothing to your first chat. Just want to look around first? Skip to Try a demo.
1. Get Hermes running
Hermes Agent is an open-source agent framework from Nous Research. You run it on a computer you own, like a Mac, a Linux box or a home server, and it keeps your agents, their tools and their history there.
Install it by following the Hermes docs: Install Hermes Agent
When it’s installed, start its dashboard:
hermes serve
Vory talks to the dashboard, not to a chat web UI or SSH. The port is 9119 unless you changed it.
2. Find your gateway’s address
Pick the address that matches where you’ll use Vory. You can add a second one later (see step 4).
- At home, on the same Wi‑Fi: use the computer’s local address and the port, like
http://192.168.1.20:9119. Plain http is fine here, but it only works at home. - From anywhere, with Tailscale: install Tailscale on the gateway computer and on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. Then use the computer’s Tailscale name or its 100.x address, like
http://my-mac.tail1234.ts.net:9119. You don’t need to open any ports, and plain http is safe inside your tailnet. - From anywhere, with a Cloudflare Tunnel: put the dashboard behind a Cloudflare Tunnel with Cloudflare Access, then use its https address. You’ll need an Access service token for Vory, because the app can’t use a browser login for Access.
- Something else: any https address that reaches the dashboard works too, like a reverse proxy or your own VPN.
3. Connect Vory
- Open Vory and go through the short tour, or tap Skip.
- Tap Connect your gateway.
- Choose how you’re connecting (Local network, Tailscale, Cloudflare Access or Other), and paste your address.
- Sign in the way your gateway is set up:
- Session token, for a dashboard with no sign-in of its own. Before you start the dashboard, set
HERMES_DASHBOARD_SESSION_TOKENto a long random value of your own, so it stays the same every time. Then paste that value here. - Username and password, if your dashboard has a password set. Vory keeps only the sign-in it gets back, never your password.
- Sign in with browser, if your dashboard uses a browser sign-in.
If your dashboard can be reached from anywhere beyond your own computer, I’d set up a username and password rather than relying on a session token.
- Session token, for a dashboard with no sign-in of its own. Before you start the dashboard, set
- Tap Test Connection, then Save.
Your bots show up straight away. Say hi to one.
4. Home and away
A gateway can have a backup address: a second way to reach the same gateway. For example, use your home address as the main one and your Tailscale or tunnel address as the backup.
Vory tries the address that worked last, then the other one, so it keeps working whether you’re home or out. It’s the same sign-in for both. You’ll find it in the gateway’s settings, under Backup address.
5. Get notifications (the Vory Companion)
When Vory is open, replies and approvals just show up. To get them when it’s closed, like a notification when a bot finishes, or an approval you can answer from your Lock Screen, install the Vory Companion on your gateway.
It’s a small plugin, and you install it from the app: Settings › Companion. Vory sets it up on the gateway for you. Then the gateway restarts, which pauses any running chats for a few seconds.
On iPhone, the Companion also gives you Live Activities while a bot works.
Try a demo
No gateway yet, or just curious? Tap Try a demo at the end of the tour. You’ll get a few made-up bots with chats, files and tasks to poke at. Nothing is saved, and demo bots go away when you connect a real gateway.
Stuck?
- In the app, the gateway form has a Troubleshooting page for when the test fails, sign-in doesn’t work or the Companion won’t install.
